This week is Men's Health Week (June 12 - 18) which coincides with Men's Health Month across Canada.

Men's health is a topic that is starting to become more prevalent and talked about in society as various campaigns help make the topic an important part of regular conversation.

A new study conducted by Ipsos included 2,155 Canadians aged between 18 to 75 which showed clear evidence of men becoming proactive when it comes to checking up on their health.

4 out of 5 (80%) have spoken with their health-care provider at least once in the past 12 months

49% of men said they would see a healthcare practitioner as soon as they noticed a health issue

Nearly 33% of women identified mental health as a top priority for the next 12 months, while only 25% of men said the same.

Canadian men were more likely to prioritize their physical health (37%) than they were their mental health (28%)

The stats from the survey illustrate the need for continuing to push mental health initiatives focused on men.

Movember continues to provide a platform for men to utilize year-round.

While Movember is well known for the moustache campaign that they run in November, they also provide resources for men throughout the entire year.

One way to spark the mental health conversation with men is a model put together by R U OK. This is a four part strategy to help navigate a conversation with a friend who might be in need of a conversation.

(A)sk - Start by asking how he’s feeling. It’s worth mentioning any changes you’ve picked up on. Maybe he’s spending more time at the bar, has gone quiet in the group chat, or isn’t turning up to social events. Whatever it is, he’s just not himself.

(L)isten - Give him your full attention. Let him know you’re hearing what he’s saying and you’re not judging. You don’t have to diagnose problems or offer solutions, but asking questions lets him know you’re listening.

(E)ncourage action - Help him focus on simple things that might improve how he feels. Is he getting enough sleep? Is he exercising and eating well? Maybe there’s something that’s helped him in the past – it’s worth asking.

(C)heck in - Suggest you catch up soon – in person if you can. If you can’t manage a meet-up, make time for a call, or drop him a message. This helps to show that you care; plus, you’ll get a feel for whether he’s feeling any better.

While conversations may be tough, they are crucial for establishing a relationship with someone who may desperately need it.

" From the start, Movember’s mission has always been about moving the dial and sparking real change when it comes to men’s health. From our work with thousands of men over the last 20 years, we know that men do care about their health and wellbeing. These results show that men around the world are, in fact, far more proactive about their health in contrast to the stereotypes that we are familiar with. While it’s encouraging to see this mindset shifting, there is still work to be done,” says Todd Minerson, Country Director for Movember Canada.
