Traces of Old Victoria: History and Art Lecture
Ross Bay Villa Historic House Museum presents a blend of art and history. On May 9th, at 7:30PM, join artist Mone Vogel and historian Nick Russell’s exploration of place and meaning.
The Villa currently hosts its very first art exhibition of contemporary urban landscapes, viewable on May 11th and 18th from 11-4. For the past few years Mone Vogel has been documenting the urban landscape in Victoria with her paintings.
The city is changing quickly and to her nothing seems safe from the bulldozers these days. One's favourite corner store or old sign might be there one day and gone the next.
By painting the places that hold meaning and beauty to Mone Vogel, she feels that she can give them a life beyond their physical presence.
Nick Russell, PhD, has amassed a wealth of knowledge about the architectural changes to Victoria over the decades, including several books such as Victoria Then and Now: Postcards from the Past, and Glorious Victorian Homes: 150 Years of Architectural History in British Columbia's Capital. Mone Vogel will speak about the reasons behind painting a few chosen paintings, while Russell will offer a glimpse into the fascinating histories behind those subjects.
