Canada Post presents union with framework to ‘reignite’ discussions and reach a deal

A few days after talks between Canada Post and the union representing more than 55,000 striking workers stalled, the corporation said on Sunday that it has presented a “comprehensive framework” in hopes of reaching an agreement.

“The framework includes proposals to bring greater flexibility to the corporation’s delivery model, while also demonstrating movement on other key issues,” reads a statement from Canada Post.

“It is our hope that these proposals will reignite discussions and, together with the support of mediators, help the parties work toward final agreements.”

The framework comes after the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) said it filed an unfair labour practice complaint with the Canada Industrial Relations Board because some striking workers had been laid off.

“Canada Post did not consult the Union before laying off our members and is refusing to provide essential information to the union in terms of the number of layoffs, when they happened and how employees were selected for these layoffs,” reads a CUPW statement from Friday.

“We are taking this legal action and are asking for interim relief to force CPC to provide information to the Union, to rescind those layoffs and stop threatening our members who are exercising their constitutionally protected right to strike.”

In the press release sent out by Canada Post on Sunday, the corporation added that it understands the impact the national strike is having on Canadians.

Among those to be impacted are charities, such as the VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation’s Millionaire Lottery.

“Mail campaigns are a crucial way for us to connect with supporters and raise awareness about the VGH Millionaire Lottery,” said Angela Chapman, president and CEO of VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation.

“The strike has severely impacted our ability to reach ticket buyers, many of whom rely on mailed materials to participate. This will certainly affect the funding of much-needed equipment and medical research this year provided by our Foundation to the world-class healthcare teams at VGH & UBC Hospital.”

The charity urged participants to purchase tickets online at this link, by phone at 604-602-5848, toll-free at 1-888-445-5825, or in person at London Drugs locations.
