Hometown of deceased Broncos player to name arena after him

A city in Alberta will honour one of their own, a 21-year-old hockey player who died in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash on April 6, 2018, which killed 16 people and injured another 13 on a Saskatchewan highway.

Councillors in Lethbridge, Alta., voted unanimously on Monday to alter the name of a local rink. The Adams Park Ice Centre will become Logan Boulet Arena.

Additionally, they voted 8-1 to direct the mayor’s office, as a one-time exception to a decades-old rule that prohibited its mayor from issuing proclamations, to proclaim Apr. 7, 2019, as “Green Shirt Day,” in the city – a day which has spread to numerous cities across the country.

Coun. Joe Mauro was the sole opposition to the exception, noting that he didn’t want the resolution to the mayor’s proclamation to set a precedent for future proceedings.

In 1999, Lethbridge councillors passed a resolution disallowing the mayor from issuing proclamations. However, Coun. Blaine Hyggen, who had initially introduced the resolution, thought the exception was necessary in Boulet’s case.

“This movement has been unbelievable. The Logan Boulet Effect has changed so many lives and will continue to do so. For that reason I thought it was extremely important,” Hyggen said.

Green Shirt Day will honour the former Broncos defenceman’s life, and his contributions as an organ donor, which has been called the Logan Boulet Effect.

The Logan Boulet Effect directly benefitted six organ recipients, but also caused a wave of over 100,000 Canadians to register as organ donors in the weeks following his death.

Lethbridge city administration will work to inaugurate the stadium with its new title in preparation for the next hockey season.
