New regulations are being put in place by the Federal Government in an effort to curb fatigue in flight crews on commercial planes.
The regulations will put a lower limit on the number of hours a pilot can be in the air and on duty before taking a break.
Carriers that may have a difficult time meeting the new, lower hours may be allowed to create a fatigue-management system “to identify and minimize the sources of fatigue and manage fatigue risk in an operation.”
The management system approach will give smaller, specialty airlines some flexibility.

Another change being made is an increase in the number of hours alcohol consumption is prohibited for flight crews before being on duty. It has been increased from eight hours to 12 hours.
