Empowering lives with Bailey Martin from the Parkinson Wellness Project

In the latest episode of Business Matters, presented by Island Savings a Division of First West Credit Union, host Rob Cupello welcomes guest Bailey Martin, executive director of Parkinson Wellness Project.

Martin has lived on the island for around 19 years and has a background in athletic and exercise therapy.

She is committed to improving the lives of those affected by Parkinson's Disease through the non-profit organization the Parkinson Wellness Project.

Her journey began with a practicum at a neuro rehab clinic, where the resilience of clients deeply inspired her, shaping her career path. "I was so inspired by the dedication and effort our clients put into every session that they came to," she shares.

The Parkinson Wellness Project offers diverse services, including the newly diagnosed series, providing education about Parkinson's, medications, and the significance of exercise.

With over 100,000 Canadians currently living with Parkinson’s, a number expected to double by 2031, the organization plays a crucial role in supporting individuals with the disease.

Martin expresses satisfaction in witnessing positive changes, emphasizing that despite being a degenerative disease, individuals can still improve their health.

Continuing the discussion, Martin addresses the challenges faced by the organization, particularly financial constraints. The Parkinson Wellness Project relies heavily on community grants and donations while providing services free of charge.

Despite these hurdles, Martin maintains a gratitude-centered approach, emphasizing the importance of appreciating one's body. "I do my best to be grateful and appreciate the body that I am given," she says.

Martin suggests that the best way to support the Parkinson Wellness Project is through donations and volunteering.
