UPDATE: Tiger Woods awake and recovering in hospital following serious car crash

(UPDATE: Feb. 24 @ 9 am) - Tiger Woods is awake and recovering in hospital after suffering multiple injuries to his leg in a serious car crash Tuesday.

According to a statement from his social media channels, Woods had to undergo a “long surgical procedure on his lower right leg and ankle.”

"Mr. Woods suffered significant orthopedic injuries to his right lower extremity that were treated during emergency surgery by Orthopaedic trauma specialists at Harbour-UCLA Medical Centre, a level 1 trauma centre," said Dr. Anish Mahajan in the statement.

"Comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones were stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia. Additional injuries to the bones of the foot and ankle were stabilized with a combination of screws and pins."

Woods was the lone person in the car at the time of the accident and authorities say he did have his seat belt on.

A traffic investigation has been launched into the accident which occurred around 7 am just south of Los Angeles.

(Original Story: Feb. 23 @ 12 pm) - One of the world’s biggest superstars is currently in surgery after a serious car crash this morning.

According to LA County Sheriffs, emergency crews responded to the single-vehicle rollover crash in the city of Rolling Hill Estates, south of Los Angeles, around 7:10 am today.

A police statement said that the vehicle sustained major damage.

“The driver and sole occupant was identified as PGA golfer, Eldrick ‘Tiger’ Woods,” explained the statement.

“Mr. Woods was extricated from the wreck with the ‘jaws of life’ by Los Angeles County firefighters and paramedics, then transported to a local hospital by ambulance for his injuries.”

His agent, Mark Steinberg, confirmed the news and provided additional details to Golf Digest.

“Tiger Woods was in a single-car accident this morning in California where he suffered multiple leg injuries,” Steinberg said.

“He is currently in surgery and we thank you for your privacy and support.”

Woods was in Los Angeles over the weekend to host the PGA Tour's Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club.

He spent time with David Spade and Dwayne Wade at Rolling Hills Country Club on Monday, but did not hit balls or play any holes due to lingering injuries.
