Another brand of onions has been recalled in response to the continuing salmonella outbreak in the USA.
Krown Produce Inc. is the latest company to take its red and yellow onions off the market.
They were grown by Thomson International Inc., which is based in Bakersfield, California.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) explained: “Consumers should not consume the recalled products described below or foods containing these raw onions.”
It added: “These products may also have been purchased on-line or through various restaurant locations. They may also have been sold in bulk or in smaller packages with or without a label and may not bear the same brand or product names as described below.”
Public Health Canada said that, as of Aug. 7, there have been 239 confirmed salmonella cases in the country linked to the recent outbreak.
The majority are in BC (67) and Alberta (149).
No deaths have been reported, but 29 people have been sent to hospital.
Those affected range in age from three to 100.
Anyone who becomes sick from eating the onions is urged to call a doctor.
The agency warned: “Food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections.
“Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.”
Anyone in possession of the recalled products should throw them out or return them to the store from which they were purchased.
