Plan approved to build new $1.9B hospital for BC in Vancouver

A plan to build a new St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver to serve British Columbia has been approved.

The $1.9 billion scheme will see the facility moved to Station St. and is expected to open in 2026.

St Paul’s, which opened in 1894, offers specialist cardiac services, HIV/AIDS care and kidney treatment to the whole province.

The new site will be home to several leading provincial programs and centres, including for lung care, eating disorders and specialty surgeries and transplants.

It also offer emergency care, mental health and addictions treatment, end-of-life care, First Nations health, maternity care and colorectal and gastrointestinal services.

"Today, we are safeguarding these life-saving services by taking action to build a brand new St. Paul's Hospital that will serve more people and offer better access to the specialized care people need," said Premier John Horgan.

Minister of Health Adrian Dix, meanwhile, celebrated progress finally being made on the project.

“After more than a decade and a half of stalling, it is exciting to give the green light to a new, state-of-the-art St. Paul's Hospital that will continue this legacy for many years to come.”

The new hospital will have a capacity of 548 beds.
