5 things you need to know this morning: March 28, 2023

Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. Six killed, including three young kids, in Nashville shooting

Six people were gunned down at a small, private Christian school just south of downtown Nashville on Monday. The victims have been identified as Cynthia Peak, 61; Katherine Koonce, 60; Mike Hill, 61; and Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs and William Kinney, all aged nine. Police killed the shooter, a former student identified as 28-year-old Audrey Hale.

2. Hockey Canada says 2018 junior players ineligible for international competition

Until the investigation into alleged sexual assault involving members of the 2018 Canadian world junior hockey team is complete, no member of that team will wear the maple leaf. Hockey Canada says players from that team will not be considered for international play until the investigation has wrapped up.

3. Great Dane births 21 puppies in 27 hours

You can call Namina, a two-year-old Great Dane, a supermom. The dog went into labour last Wednesday and it lasted well into Thursday, as Namine birthed 21 puppies over a 27-hour span. Unfortunately, two of the puppies died shortly after birth, but nearly all of the dogs weighed over a pound. Namine’s proud owner, Tanya Dubbs of Pocahontas, Virginia, said she was surprised by the number of puppies born, expecting something closer to 13-14.

4. No atmosphere found at faraway Earth-sized world

Scientists using the Webb Space Telescope have found no evidence of an atmosphere at one of the seven rocky, Earth-sized planets orbiting another star, noting that news does not bode well for the other six planets in that solar system. The Trappist solar system has long enticed astronomers since it was spotted just 40 light-years away.

5. Amateur gold digger makes incredible $220,000 find in Australia

Darren Kamp has been in the business of gold prospecting for 43 years, but says he has never seen a discovery like this. A gold-filled rock weighing 10 pounds, more than half of that being the precious metal. It was discovered in the state of Victoria in an area known as the “Golden Triangle” and brought into Kamp for evaluation. He says it’s worth $240,000 AUD ($220,000 CAD).
