Scientists in South Africa have announced the discovery of a new COVID-19 variant. The variant – B.1.1.529 – has "very unusual" mutations, the scientists said.

Dozens of migrants have died after attempting to cross the English Channel from France to the UK. The UK has been publicly pressing France to prevent illegal boat launches but France has sought to blame Britain for the crisis.
