5 things you need to know this morning: Sept. 22, 2021

Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. Cabinet shuffle won’t save Kenney from COVID-19 crisis in Alberta: critics

On Tuesday, Premier Jason Kenney made a minor cabinet shuffle, swapping the roles of the province’s health minister and labour minister. Critics say the decision will do nothing to stem the surge of people with COVID-19, which is currently overwhelming Alberta’s health-care system. Some UCP constituency associations are even considering passing motions asking for an expedited party leadership review.

2. Billionaire building huge new city in the US desert

Billionaire Marc Lore and celebrated architect Bjarke Ingel have a massive project in mind. The duo wants to build an entire city from scratch in the desert of the western USA. Called Telosa, the fully-contained city would be extended over 150,000 acres and have a population of five million within 40 years. It would be “sustainable” and “equitable” they say, but some are calling it a “vanity project” and “a greenwashed Vegas.”

3. UK’s new travel policy criticised for excluding fully vaccinated Indians

New travel rules come into effect for the United Kingdom on Oct. 4, but they’re receiving some criticism for one important detail. The rules do not recognize travellers from India as vaccinated, even if they have received both doses of the Covidshield vaccine, which is the same as the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine but manufactured in India. India’s external affairs ministry called the policy discriminatory.

4. Sex and the City actor Willie Garson dead at 57

Willie Garson, best known for his roles as Stanford Blatch on Sex and the City and Mozzie on White Collar, has died. He was 57 years old. His son confirmed the death on social media Tuesday night and tributes started to pour in. No cause of death was released.

5. Memorial Cup heading to the east coast in 2022

After two straight shortened seasons where no Memorial Cup tournament was played, the CHL is hoping for more normalcy this year. That means a full season, playoffs in all three leagues and a Memorial Cup tournament next spring. Today, the CHL announced that the Saint John Sea Dogs have been selected to host the 2022 Memorial Cup.
