Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.
Preliminary data from Elections Canada shows that Canadians voted at a historically low rate in the 2021 federal election. Current numbers show the voter turnout at 59 per cent, the lowest rate in more than a decade. That number will increase a bit as Elections Canada verifies roughly one-million mail-in ballots and counts ballots by those who were not registered when they showed up at polling stations. The turnout in the 2015 and 2019 elections was over 67 per cent each time.

GM Steve Yzerman announced Wednesday that Tyler Bertuzzi is the only unvaccinated player on the Detroit Red Wings. As a result, Bertuzzi will miss games in Canada and forfeit around $400,000 of his salary for doing so. The decision to not be vaccinated will be even costlier for Edmonton Oilers’ forward Josh Archibald, who will need to miss about 30 games due to Canada-US border restrictions.
