1. Russia exempts tech workers and journalists from conscription

Russia has announced a list of workers that will be exempt from the country's partial conscription of men for the Ukraine war. Journalists working for state media, tech workers and bankers are among those protected from being called up to fight.

2. Tesla recalls over a million vehicles in US

Tesla has recalled over a million cars in the US after their windows were found to close too fast and thus potentially hurt people's fingers. The car giant said a software update will fix the issue.

3. Dozens found dead after migrant boat sinks

More than 70 people have been found dead after their boat – believed to have been heading to Europe – sank off Syria's coast. Officials said the people who died were migrants from Syria, Lebanon and Palestine.

4. Hilary Mantel dies at 70

Bestselling author Hilary Mantel has died at age 70. Her publisher said the Wolf Hall writer died "suddenly yet peacefully."

5. South Korean president denies calling US lawmakers 'idiots'

South Korea's president has denied calling US members of Congress "idiots." Yoon Suk-yeol said he was actually referring to his own country's lawmakers.

In happier news, scientists in the UK have hailed what they say is a promising new therapy for people with cancer. The researchers said their novel approach includes infecting patients with a common virus that destroys cancerous cells.
