BC records 538 new cases of COVID-19, hospitalizations rise to 217

Health officials announced 538 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, while also implementing several province-wide public health orders.

The vast majority of the new cases remain clustered in the Lower mainland, with 178 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 309 in the Fraser Health region, 28 in the Interior Health region, 12 in Island Health and 11 in the Northern Health region.

That brings BC's active case count to an all-time high of 6,861.

Hospitalizations are also at an all-time high with 217 patients with the virus, 59 of whom are in critical care.

Officials are reporting one additional death related to the virus, bringing BC's death toll to 321.

"I was anxious four weeks ago when our daily average was 175 cases, on Wednesday we had over 762 cases," said Dr. Bonnie Henry.

“We need to do more. We need to keep our essential activities open and operating safely, we need to keep our schools open and operating safely, and our workplaces that can be safely open, open. And we need to relive the stress on our health care system.

“We need to go back to what we were doing in April and May and March when we had our pandemic bubble.”
