BC sets new record high with 817 COVID-19 cases over the weekend

Health officials have announced a record-setting 817 new cases of COVID-19 were identified over the weekend.

The new numbers cover a three-day reporting period since Friday, with 317 cases recorded between Friday and Saturday, 293 cases between Saturday and Sunday, and 207 cases between Sunday and Monday.

That spike in new cases follows a record-setting day on Wednesday, Oct. 21 when BC recorded 203 new cases.

That record has now been eclipsed four times in less than a week.

BC now has 2,325 active cases, with 77 people in hospital, 26 of whom are in critical or intensive care.

Three additional deaths related to the novel coronavirus were also recorded over the weekend.

With less than a week to go before Halloween night, Dr. Bonnie Henry has announced a new health order limiting to household gatherings.

Any household gathering will now be restricted to the number of people living in the house and its "safe six" bubble of close family or friends.

The order has been implemented to keep adults from throwing private parties.

Henry also said the spike in cases over the past week is likely related to family gatherings during Thanksgiving.
