US-Canada border closure extended into September

The Canada-US border closure has been extended into September, Public Safety Minister Bill Blair announced today.

It was due to reopen on Aug. 20.

Blair, who revealed the extension on Twitter, said the border will now be closed until Sept. 21.

“We will continue to do what’s necessary to keep our communities safe,” he said.

The border remains open for essential services.

The US Department of Homeland Security revealed in mid-July that the closure had been extended into August.

At the time, states in the south and west of the US were seeing a surge in new COVID-19 cases.

While the number of new cases is down compared with July, over 50,000 were added on Thursday.

The country has a total of 5.26 million confirmed cases, with 167,000 deaths linked to the disease.
