Police watchdog investigating after man seriously injured in fall at Uptown Mall

Independent investigators are looking into a police incident from Saturday night involving an alleged shoplifter who was seriously injured at Uptown Mall.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC said that just before 11 pm, Saanich Police received a report of a shoplifter at Walmart.

According to police, the suspect ran to an upper mall parking lot and fell from a ledge outside a guardrail, landing about two-to-three storeys below and suffering serious injuries.

He was transported to hospital by ambulance.

The IIO’s investigation will hopefully determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions played in the man’s fall.
