Gastrointestinal outbreak declared over at Royal Inland Hospital

The norovirus that has plagued Royal Inland Hospital for weeks is officially over!!!

According to Interior Health Spokesperson Susan Duncan, the news was announced today that Unit 5North was free of the virus. She adds that the gastrointestinal outbreak infected nearly 80 people, along with five wards, when it was thriving.

Duncan mentioned while everyone worked hard to get rid of the virus, the housekeeping staff was the real MVP.

"We would say thank you to all the staff and physicians for all the hard work they did as they cared for the people amidst the outbreak," said Duncan. "But really, we would like to say a special thank you to the housekeeping staff because they were so vigilant in their efforts to eliminate the virus."

"Also thank you to the community members who listened and did not come to the hospital during the outbreak if they could avoid it. They were definitely trying to stay away when they felt sick from the gastrointestinal illness and clearly they were washing their hands well."

Duncan said the hospital would now conduct a terminal clean to eradicate the virus for good. She went on to say she hopes there will be no more complication with norovirus but couldn't predict it for sure.

"I could not predict that because of the strength of this virus. I certainly hope its gone for this season at least."
