School District 73 is kicking off the Safer Streets pilot program at the Arthur Hatton Elementary School this week.
The program will run from May 29 to June 9 and involves temporary closure of specific roads near the school
A release says the program encourages students and families to walk, ride and roll to school.
“The program helps to build a sense of community and foster a greater sense of belonging among students, staff, and nearby residents by creating a shared space for socializing before and after school,” said SD73 board chair Heather Grieve.
“This can help to improve the social well-being of the community and contribute to a more welcoming and inclusive school environment for all students,”
Each student who is able to participate will have a chance to win a prize and the whole school will have a chance to participate in different activities each morning.
This will include games like ball hockey, hop scotch and four square to encourage students and families to be active and and enjoy time outside during the pilot program.
In addition, there will be a celebration station set up at the school hosted by Go By Bike Week every morning during the first week.
As a result of the Safer Street program, Schubert Drive from Holly Avenue to Oak Road and Chestnut Avenue from Schubert Drive to the Fortune Drive Frontage Road will be temporarily closed.
A release from the City of Kamloops says the closures will be in effect from 7:45-8:45 am and from 2-3 pm, Monday through Friday.
Students at Arthur Hattton will be introduced to the program during an assembly on Monday.
