City seeks feedback on bike routes throughout Kelowna

As Go By Bike Week kicks off in BC, the City of Kelowna is seeking feedback and input on the existing and future bike network.

There are currently two studies underway and the city says there are multiple opportunities for people to share their ideas, both in person and online.

The city is seeking input on how best to incorporate neighbourhood bikeways into the bike network.

Neighbourhood bikeways are usually located on low-traffic streets and often include special features that prioritize cyclists, calm traffic and connect to the larger bike network.

“While neighbourhood bikeways are new to Kelowna, they are considered a high-quality bicycle facility that is appropriate for people of all ages and abilities,” says a release.

“Neighbourhood bikeways are used successfully in many other cities across Canada and the US.”

People can share their input on these bikeways at several in-person events including three Go By Bike Week celebration stations:

• Okanagan Rail Trail at Spall/ Clement (May 30, 7-9am)

• Ben Lee Park (June 1, 4-6pm)

• Railside Brewing (June 2, 4-6pm)

There will also be three drop-in session throughout the month of June:

• Parkinson Activity Centre (June 12, 10am-12pm)

• Rutland Centennial Park (June 13, 3-5pm)

• Mission Rec Transit Exchange (June 21, 4-6pm)

Alternatively, people can share feedback by completing an online survey, which is available at getinvolved.kelowna.ca (available form May 29 to July 2).

There will also be an online information session held on Thursday, June 22 from 10-11 am where people can learn more about neighbourhood bikeways.

Glenmore Bike Route

The city is also seeking input, feedback and comments on the Glenmore Active Transportation Corridor (ATC).

The ATC aims to provide an improved “all ages and abilities” active transportation connection between the intersection of Glenmore Drive / High Road and the Okanagan Rail Trail, where it crosses Glenmore Drive at Spall Road.

Currently, the city is exploring three options for the route:

• Uni-directional protected bike lanes (on both sides of Glenmore Dr) from High Rd to the Okanagan Rail Trail

• Bi-directional protected bike lanes (on the east side of Glenmore Dr) from High Rd to the Okanagan Rail Trail

• A neighbourhood bikeway facility that routes through the Old Glenmore neighbourhood from Glenmore Dr / High Rd to the Okanagan Rail Trail

People can swing by the Go By Bike Week celebration station at the Okanagan Rail Trail at Spall/ Clement on May 29, from 7-9am, to learn more.

People can also finish a poll, comment on the proposed map or ask a question at getinvolved.kelowna.ca/glenmore-atc from May 29 to July 2.
