Kelowna city councillors had their first look at an apartment building proposed for Lawson Avenue on Monday.
Situated at the edge of Kelowna’s downtown in an area with multiple medium density residential developments, the project calls for a four-storey building accommodating 16 units.
The project calls for five variances, three of which being related to setback and two regarding on-site parking.
Both councillors Luke Stack and Charlie Hodge commented on the large number of variances, all of which are supported by city staff.
“Five variances, that’s a signal there’s too much building being put on the lot,” said coun. Stack.
“A four-storey building on that lot size could be tricky,” added coun. Hodge.
If approved, a single-family dwelling on the property would be demolished to make room for the new building.
According to development plans, the 16 units would range from 458 to 612 square feet.
Each unit would come with a below-ground parking stall and the building provide feature two visitor stalls.
A public hearing on the project will be held in the coming weeks.
