Your guide to golfing in Victoria this spring

The days are getting longer and the grass is getting greener, which can mean only one thing: golf season is here.

To help plan your next round and make your spring a hole-in-one, we’ve compiled a list of the top public courses in and around the Capital Region.

Cedar Hill Golf Course

Avg. price/18 holes: $30-$50

Par: 67

Cedar Hill is one of the oldest public courses in Victoria and a must-play for any Island golf enthusiast.

Maintained by the city of Saanich, Cedar Hill offers a well-manicured executive-length 18 hole course for players of all ages and skill levels. There is also a small practice area and driving range on location.

Tip: Due to its popularity and easily-accessible location in the heart of Saanich, it can be tough to secure a tee-time at certain points in the year so get out and play as soon as you can.

Highland Pacific

Avg. price/18 holes: $60-$99 (depending on season)

Par 72

Self-dubbed as “Victoria’s friendliest public golf course” Highland Pacific is one of the best full-length public courses the region has to offer.

Nestled in the hills above the View Royal neighbourhood near Thetis Lake Regional Park, Highland Pacific offers 18 picturesque holes featuring views of the Juan de Fuca Strait and Olympic Mountains in the distance.

Its mountainous terrain and variety of holes make it a challenge for even the more-experienced golfer, however, well maintained fairways and greens, as well as two unique front and back nines make it a pleasure to play even on your bad days.

The course also offers a driving range, putting greens and quality food and refreshments at The Range Cafe.

Tip: This course has a lot of elevation changes, so unless you fancy a good hike, a cart is recommended.

Bear Mountain

Avg. price/18 holes:

Mountain Course: $150-$250 (Island residents, season dependent); $190-$350 (public, season dependent)

Valley Course: $99-$150 (Island residents, season dependent); $150-$250 (public, season dependent)

Par 71 (both courses)

With two full-length courses designed by golf legend Jack Nicklaus and his son Steve, Bear Mountain is a bucket list course for golf lovers around the country.

Both the Mountain and Valley courses offer some of the most scenic views and environment of any course across the province, and while the price point is significantly higher than most public courses in the area, the quality and experience Bear Mountain offers make it hard not to pay a visit to the course this year.

Both courses are set on the grounds of Bear Mountain Resort, which features the Westin Hotel and Spa, one of Victoria’s top-rated hotels, a tennis club, restaurants and scenic walking trails.

Tip: Consider purchasing a vacation package to take advantage of all of Bear Mountain’s amenities while you enjoy golfing two spectacular courses.

Olympic View

Avg. price/18 holes: $69-$105 (depending on season)

Par 72

Olympic View is an aptly named course offering spectacular views of the Olympic Mountain Range from its Metchosin/Royal Bay-area location.

It has consistently ranked among the top courses on the Island for its creative and challenging layout, as well as its tranquil forest setting and meticulously maintained grounds.

Olympic View is a course that requires nearly every club in your bag due to its wide variety of holes, difficult doglegs and thin, sometimes cavernous-like fairways. Course management is a must on this track.

Tips: Olympic View’s Table Nineteen Restaurant offers fantastic specials on food and drinks all year round and has one of the best patios around that gives guests a front row seat for golfers
climbing up to the raised green on the 18th hole.

Cordova Bay

Avg. price/18 holes: $70-$120 (depending on season)

Par 71 (Bay Course), 27 (Ridge Course)

Cordova Bay Golf Club is the ultimate golf sanctuary in the Victoria area, featuring two courses – the full-length 18-hole Bay Course and the nine-hole Ridge Course – as well as an unmatched practice facility with a driving range and a short-game practice area.

Additionally, its seaside location along Cordova Bay in Central Saanich makes it one of the most picturesque public courses the South Island has to offer and a fantastic place to enjoy the sunny weather this spring and summer.

It's easy to see why this course has been awarded Facility of the Year honours by the PGA of British Columbia on multiple occasions, due to its spectacular location and variety of different options to play and improve your game.

Tip: Bill Mattick’s Restaurant at Cordova Bay is one of the top dining spots at any course on the Island and a must stop for food and refreshments following a fun day of golf.

Metchosin Golf & Country Club

Avg. price/18 holes: $69-$105 (depending on season)

Par 69 (men), 75 (women)

If you're looking for a more relaxed golfing experience this season, consider a trip out to Metchosin Golf & Country Club out on the Westshore.

Metchosin G&C offers a fun, yet challenging nine-hole course for players of all skill levels with cheaper rates than some of the other courses around Victoria. It's a great place to enjoy 18 holes and a post-round beverage at their cozy clubhouse located below their first tee deck.

Tip: Metchosin hosts a Night Golf event every summer, allowing players to enjoy the game in a unique setting under the stars with glow-in-the-dark balls and neon lit fairways. It's a one of a kind golf experience for players of all ages and skill levels.
