Woman turns herself in after hitting elderly woman in a crosswalk

A 32-year-old woman in Nanaimo turned herself in to police after hitting a 60-year-old woman in a crosswalk this morning.

Nanaimo RCMP said that at 9:30 am, the woman ran a red light at Terminal Ave and Commercial Street and struck a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk with her pickup truck.

Police were in the immediate vicinity of the incident and responded quickly.

Investigators spoke with witnesses and were able to determine that the victim was proceeding legally through a marked crosswalk, when she was struck by an older model blue pickup. The pickup had been driving northbound on Terminal Ave prior to the collision.

The driver fled the scene and drove to the Nanaimo RCMP detachment and turned herself in.

She was promptly arrested for Dangerous Driving and Failing to Remain at the Scene of an Accident, both criminal code charges. She was then lodged in cells.

The victim was transported to the Nanaimo hospital and was treated for relatively minor injuries.

She is expected to make a full recovery.

Investigators are asking anyone who with dash cam or cell phone video of the incident or any pre-collision driving of the suspect vehicle, to call the Nanaimo RCMP Municipal Traffic Unit at 250-754-2345 and quote file # 2021-7073.
