Central Okanagan residents can now report certain crimes online

Residents in the Central Okanagan will now be able to report minor crimes online.

Starting today, residents across Kelowna, West Kelowna and Lake Country will able to go online to report non-emergency, mostly property related crimes that are no longer in progress.

The pilot project is being launched at just four detachments across British Columbia this summer as frontline RCMP officer’s investigative file loads increase.

This tool will allow the general public to report non-emergency crimes online through the detachment website,” said Supt. Brent Mundle.

He said the goal is “freeing up time for frontline personnel, including both police dispatchers and police officers, to respond to more serious crimes or emergencies.”

Mundle added that it also exemplifies efforts to actively modernize Kelowna’s police operations and keep up with technical advances.

Using a smartphone, tablet or computer, residents with a valid email address will be able to report crimes that fit the following criteria:

  • Your report will NOT require a follow up by a police officer.
  • You have no witness nor suspect.
  • You have lost something that costs less than $5,000.
  • Someone has stolen something from you that costs less than $5,000.
  • Someone has vandalized your property or car and it will cost less than $5,000 to repair it.
  • There are no items involving personal identity, firearms, licence plates or licence plate validation decals.
