Residents are being reminded to be aware of their surroundings following a scary incident in the Okanagan this weekend.
On Saturday, the Fairfield Animal Hospital reported that a puppy was rushed to emergency after it was bitten by a rattlesnake in Kal Park near Vernon.
The dog was attacked by the snake, which was hiding underneath a park bench.
"Bentley (right) was out on a hike with his friends in Kal Park in Vernon this week, and stopped for a rest and a photo op," wrote the hospital.
"A baby rattler was hiding under the bench, so when the dogs jumped down the rattler struck out."
Bentley received antivenin and stay at the hospital overnight. Thankfully, he is now healthy and at home.
"If you see a rattler, back away slowly and give them a wide berth. If your dog is bitten, carry small dogs and calmly walk larger dogs to the car and get to your veterinarian as soon as possible."
"With treatment, our furry friends recover just fine!"
