UPDATE: Charges laid following fatal shooting of Okanagan man

(UPDATE: Sept. 22 @ 1:35 pm) - Charges have been laid in relation to a fatal shooting in the North Okanagan on Monday.

Jevon Daniel Smith, 46, of Spallumcheen has been charged with second-degree murder and the RCMP is hoping that members of the public will come forward to assist the investigation.

"We are asking anyone who had contact with Mr. Smith in the hours preceding this incident to contact the Southeast District Major Crime unit at 1-877-987-8477," said S/Sgt. Janelle Shoihet.

The RCMP said the investigation developed quickly from "a very dynamic and dangerous situation" and attributes the speedy result to effective coordination between multiple agencies.

The matter is now before the courts and further updates from police will be limited.

(Original story: Sept. 21 @ 9:05 am) - The Southeast District Major Crime Unit (SDMCU) is investigating a fatal shooting that happened in Spallumcheen on Monday.

RCMP officers were called to the 4500 block of Back Enderby Road around 11:30 am for reports of a possible shooting and the associated vehicle fleeing the scene.

Upon arrival, police discovered a dead body.

A search for the suspect was aided by RCMP Air Services and the vehicle that was seen leaving the area was eventually located.

Although a police cruiser was damaged by the suspect vehicle, officers were able to arrest the man near Armstrong and take him into custody.

“The identity and further details regarding the deceased person will not be released pending further investigation and notification of next of kin,” explained S/Sgt. Janelle Shoihet.

“At this time, we believe that the man arrested and the deceased person were known to each other and there is no ongoing threat to public safety.”

The SDMCU has assumed conduct of this investigation.
