Arrests made in relation to death of SFU professor in Colombia

Arrests have been made in relation to the death of an economic professor from Simon Fraser University whose body was found in Colombia in December.

Colombian authorities found the body Ramazan ‘Ramo’ Gencay outside Medellin in December, following his disappearance in early December.

He had been in the country for seminars and his wife, Carole Gencay, says that he was last seen at a salsa night club on Dec. 6.

Global Affairs Canada reports that arrests have been made in the death of a Canadian citizen in Colombia.

A department spokesperson said that no further information can be disclosed, but consular services are being provided to the family.

Ramo had taught at SFU in the economics department since 2004, having also held academic positions at the University of Windsor and Carleton University.

Azam Bhatti, student and alumni engagement advisor at the Economics department, described the professor as a warm-hearted man who liked to be involved.

According to SFU, Ramo accumulated a lengthy list of published work during his academic career, including 70 publications in academic journals, two books and numerous visiting posts at other universities around the world.
