BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) recently caught a driver going almost double the posted speed limit near Lake Cowichan, Vancouver Island.

On the evening of March 16, 2023, a BCHP officer observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed Westbound on Highway 18.

The officer established that the vehicle was traveling at 194 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.

Unknown to the speeder, he was quickly approaching yet another officer, who had already been alerted. The second officer established that the driver was traveling at 191 km/h.

The vehicle was stopped and the driver, a 20-year-old local resident with a Novice driver’s license was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and transported to a local hospital.

“The Cowichan Valley Highway (Hwy 18) usually has wildlife, such as elk, on or in close proximity to the roadway that become a visual distraction or something nobody wants to hit, especially in the dark,” said Cst. Mike Infanti, of BCHP Chemainus.

The vehicle was impounded for seven days, and the driver was issued multiple violation tickets including excessive speed.

“Thankfully this young man did not get to meet one of these animals or any other obstacles prior to police meeting up with him,” added Infanti.
