BC Mounties kill suspect's dog after 2 officers bitten during arrest

BC Mounties were forced to kill a dog while responding to a suspected break-and-enter in a “terribly unfortunate incident.”

Richmond RCMP said a dog lunged at officers when they attempted to arrest its owner on Wednesday evening.

A man was allegedly breaking into a property and had fought with officers when they tried to take him into custody.

Those officers then called for backup.

When the extra officers arrived, they entered the building – where they encountered the man and a “large dog.”

“The individual lost control of the dog which cornered the officers in a confined space and bit two of them,” police explained.

“Unfortunately, an officer was ultimately forced to shoot the dog as it continued to attack them.”

A 40-year-old man of no fixed address was later arrested and is expected to appear in court on Feb. 24 next year.

He has been charged with breaking and entering.

“This was a terribly unfortunate incident for all involved,” said Const. Kenneth Lau.

“Police officers often have to make a split-second decision between being potentially seriously injured or protecting the safety of themselves, their fellow officers or the public.”

The RCMP said it recognizes the situation is “difficult” and pledged to provide support to all involved.
