BC reports 2,174 cases of COVID-19 over weekend, another 15 deaths

Dr. Bonnie Henry announced today that British Columbia recorded another 2,174 cases of COVID-19 over the three-day weekend reporting period.

That included 835 cases on Saturday, as well as lower case counts of 671 and 668 on Sunday and today respectively.

Here’s the breakdown of where those cases were identified:

• Vancouver Coastal Health - 438 cases
• Fraser Health - 1,509 cases
• Island Health - 61 cases
• Interior Health - 106 cases
• Northern Health - 60 cases
  

BC currently has 7,327 active cases, 474 people in hospital, 176 of them in critical care and 11,781 people under active monitoring due to potential exposures to the virus.

A pair of outbreaks at Prince Rupert and Abbotsford regional hospitals were both declared over, but there’s a new outbreak at Lions Gate Hospital.

Unfortunately, another 15 people died from COVID-19 over the weekend, with Henry advising that 14 of them were over 70 years old, while the other was in their 50s.

While the weekend vaccination numbers are not yet available, the provincial health officer said that 1,877,330 doses of vaccine have been given out in BC so far.

Of those, 91,731 are second doses.

“The focus of our vaccine program continues to be to protect as many people as possible as quickly as possible to reduce the risk of transmissions and hospitalizations across the province,” Henry said.

Everyone in BC who’s 18 or older is now eligible to register for the vaccine and Henry said they should be doing so.
