Crowdfunding campaign started for Grand Forks flood victims

The City of Grand Forks have gone through some terrible loss due to flooding, but help is on the way.

Dozens of homes and businesses in Grand Forks were destroyed last week as catastrophic flooding had much the city’s downtown core under several feet of water. Thousands of residents were also forced from their homes.

Two crowdfunding campaigns have been started to help residents who have been displaced by the flooding in the City and the immediate surrounding region.

One of the campaigns was started by Chuck Varabioff, the owner of CannaFest Music Festival, a classic rock music festival that takes place in Grand Forks every summer.

“The City of Grand Forks BC is suffering from a flood that no one alive can remember,” reads the GoFundMe. “Businesses are shut down, buildings are being destroyed, and people are being impacted.”

Varabioff is also asking for all CannaFest ticket holders to donate at least $10.

Almost $30,000 has been raised so far, and the plan is to start distributing the money to people that need it on May 20.

Varabioff said that priority will be given to people who are not able to be in their primary residence at this time and who are experiencing hardship as a result of the flood. An application must also be filled out online to receive the funding.

The Grand Forks Credit Union has also started a campaign, in addition to a fund within their branch that will specifically deliver support to small business recovery. All funds raised will be given to Grand Fork residents and the Boundary.

“Thousands of people have been evacuated, leaving valuables and their entire lives behind,” the company says. “In Grand Forks, the downtown core was almost completely under water - and the small businesses that keep our town running may be closed for weeks or months to come.”

Grand Forks is in a better position as of today, as the threat of a second flood surge has greatly reduced.
