It’s suspected that drugs were a factor in a single-vehicle crash that killed a pedestrian in Surrey over the weekend.
According to the RCMP, the 44-year-old man behind the wheel of a Ford F350 that plowed through a bus stop around 4:30 pm Saturday is believed to have been impaired by drugs.
“The driver was treated at the hospital for minor injuries and was released from police custody pending further investigation,” explained Sgt. Tammy Lobb.
“The Criminal Collision Investigation Team took conduct of this investigation and impairment by drugs is believed to be a contributing factor in this fatal collision.”
The driver, who police are not publicly identifying, has been charged with dangerous operation of a conveyance causing death and impaired operation of a conveyance causing death.
According to the RCMP, the 44-year-old was travelling northbound on 144 Street, near Hyland Drive, when the crash happened.
The truck reportedly crossed into oncoming traffic before plowing through the bus stop bench where two people were waiting and finally crashing into a fence.
One victim, a 33-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was transported to hospital with minor injuries.
