ESPN Films to release 30 for 30 documentary on 2011 Stanley Cup riots in Vancouver

One of the darkest moments in Vancouver’s history will be the subject of an upcoming ESPN 30 for 30 documentary.

ESPN Films announced today that production has completed on “I’m Just Here for the Riot,” a 30 for 30 documentary about the 2011 Stanley Cup riots in Vancouver.

“Taking a subject like game seven of the Stanley Cup Finals and the ensuing riot – and using that event to tell an even bigger story about society – is what makes 30 for 30 so special,” said Marsha Cooke, VP and executive producer of ESPN Films and 30 for 30.

On June 15, 2011, the Boston Bruins beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-0 in a do-or-die game seven to win the Stanley Cup.

As Zdeno Chara, Brad Marchand, Tim Thomas and the rest of the Bruins lifted the Cup and skated with it around Rogers Arena, something much bigger was unfolding outside.

A massive riot had sparked in downtown Vancouver. Police cars were overturned and torched, windows were shattered, stores were looted and a wave of young people were caught up in the chaos.

Directors Asia Youngman and Kathleen Jayme chronicle the aftermath of the event in the upcoming 30 for 30 documentary.

It will feature footage captured on hundreds of cell phone cameras and the reaction that saw rioters outed, shamed and their lives altered forever.

The mob mentality on the streets of Vancouver that night raised deeper questions about fandom, violence and the shocking power of an angry crowd.

“The filmmakers had a clear POV: they wanted to explain not just what happened, but why,” added Cooke.

“Why do we get so caught up in the emotions of winning and losing? Why do normal people sometimes run amok and do things they regret? And in a world dominated by cell phones and social media, why do we feel compelled to capture everything, no matter how destructive it might be?”

Cooke noted that it’s a story about regret and shame, but also how you rebuild, forgive and try to find something meaningful in the aftermath.

Further details about “I Just Came for the Riot” will be announced at a later date.
