ICBC announces major change as ‘L’ tests can now be taken from home

Acquiring a learner’s license in British Columbia, or that big red ‘L’ to put on the back of your car, is the first step toward gaining your full independence on the road.

Historically, drivers have had to go to an ICBC location to take the 50-question, multiple-choice knowledge test, needing to get a grade of 80% or better to pass.

A major change was announced today, however, as aspiring drivers will now be able to take the test to get their learner’s license – either for a vehicle or motorcycle – from the comfort of their own home.

According to ICBC, the online knowledge test can be accessed at any time of day using a laptop or computer equipped with a camera and a stable internet connection.

“By offering this test online, we’re giving new drivers more choice and convenience, especially people in rural and remote communities who used to have to commute far distances to take the test,” said Niki Sharma, BC’s attorney general.

“This is part of our work to modernize ICBC services so they’re more convenient, accessible and work better for everyone in British Columbia.”

A release from the provincial insurance Crown corporation says the online test uses sophisticated technology to deter cheating.

That includes image verification, continuous webcam monitoring and real-time behaviour tracking that will protect safety and uphold test integrity.

“At ICBC, we’re focused on modernizing and enhancing our digital services to better serve our customers and this is just the beginning,” explained president and CEO Jason McDaniel. “Bringing the knowledge test online is the first step in transforming driver licensing in BC.”

McDaniel adds that ICBC will be looking ahead to offer online renewals and replacements for BC driver’s licenses and BCIDs starting in 2027.

In-office knowledge testing will remain an option for people at 114 locations across the province.

While taking the test at home will make things a lot more convenient, it will only really change things for those who don’t pass the test the first time.

That’s because once you pass the test online, you’ll need to attend one of those 114 locations with two pieces of ID to have a photo taken, complete a vision test and pay for your license.

Each year, ICBC conducts more than 337,000 knowledge tests across the province.
