Man arrested after threatening people with a toy bow and arrow and a hypodermic needle

A man in Nanaimo was arrested on Monday at Port Place Mall after allegedly threatening people with a toy bow and arrow and a hypodermic needle.

The 32-year-old now faces weapons charges as well as charges for assaulting a peace officer.

The incident occurred at about 7 pm on March 13, 2023 ,in the parking lot of the shopping centre.

Officers responded to a report of a man who had allegedly been threatening staff and bystanders in the area with a stick and toy bow and arrow, that appeared to have a hypodermic needle extending from the end.

When officers located the suspect and approached him, he fled. A short foot chase and struggle ensued, which ended with the suspect being arrested and taken into custody.

Adam Cajander was held in custody to await a judicial bail hearing. On March 14, 2023, Cajander was formally charged with assaulting a police officer, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, uttering threats and resisting arrest.

He was then remanded into police custody to await his next court appearance that has been set for March 28, 2023.
