Suspect arrested in connection to devastating Pier Park fire in New Westminster

Residents watched in horror on Sunday night as a beloved part of New Westminster went up in flames.

The city’s Pier Park burned throughout the night and into the morning, leaving the old part of the pier destroyed and the iconic ‘W’ needing to be taken down.

It was instantly classified as a suspicious fire and on Tuesday afternoon, the New Westminster Police Department arrested a suspect in connection to the blaze.

The unidentified man was brought into custody on arson-related offences, but has since been released on a number of conditions.

“This investigation is continuing and we would still encourage anyone with information to come forward and speak with our investigators,” said Sgt. Sanjay Kumar.

According to the NWPD, the public is not at further risk and the police aren’t currently looking for any additional suspects, but continue to gather evidence.

“Fire investigations by their very nature are extremely difficult and we have had significant resources dedicated to this investigation day and night since the fire began,” explained Deputy Chief Cst. Paul Hyland.

“I am very proud of the hard work and professionalism shown by our members on this file as public safety has been a paramount concern throughout.”

There’s no word yet on the cause of the fire.
