Truck drivers will soon face steeper fines for not using chains

BC will soon increase the fine amount levied against commercial drivers not carrying chains or not installing them when required on BC highways.

Starting Oct. 1, drivers will now be fined $196 for not carrying chains when and where required and $598 for not installing chains during mandatory chain ups.

That's a stark increase from the previous fine amount of $121.

Previous regulations only required vehicles over 27,000 kilograms to carry and use traction devices, however, new regulations are now required for vehicles over 5,000 kg.

Vehicles with licensed gross vehicle weights less than 11,794 kilograms, like buses or five-ton trucks, must use chains on a minimum of two tires and can use steel chains, cable chains, automatic chains, socks or wheel sanders if not equipped with winter tires.

The new regulations come after two hectic winters along the Coquihalla where 45 extended closures have been imposed between 2017 and 2019.
