Vehicle seized after RCMP officer spots laughable fake insurance decal

Insuring your vehicle can be expensive, but getting caught trying to fake having insurance can be way more costly.

That’s the warning being issued by the Coquitlam RCMP today in relation to a June incident that resulted in a van being seized by police.

An alert citizen initially called authorities in June to report the vehicle being suspicious.

When police found the van, it was unoccupied, had multiple drivers associated to it and it also featured a laughable fake insurance decal that said its coverage was good until March 2020.

“Had we stopped it while it was moving the driver would have faced some serious consequences,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin.

“We’re used to hearing creative excuses for people trying to get out of a ticket, but I’d love to have heard this driver’s explanation.”

If a driver was connected to the van, they would have faced a fine of $600, a court date regarding the use of fictitious plates or documents and they could have also faced criminal code charges for forgery.

McLaughlin said the best way to worry about getting pulled over or facing fines is to insure your vehicle properly, display your plates correctly and obey the law.

That seems simple enough!
