After two weeks of heavy snowfall, avalanche control has become a priority along B.C.'s mountain highway passes.
Drive BC is reporting that a portion of Highway 1 east of Golden will be temporarily closed Thursday afternoon to conduct avalanche control work.
The work is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., with the highway expected to reopen by 4 p.m.
While the work will likely cause minor delays for some motorists, if left unaddressed the resulting slides can lead to lengthy highway closures.
Last spring, Transportation BC released a video of avalanche control work being done near Fernie along Highway 3.
Fly along during last week's avalanche control on Morrisey Ridge. The avalanche paths are in the Lizard Range, about 16km west of #FernieBC, and the deposits came within 100m of #BCHwy3 (don't worry, it was closed for the work). pic.twitter.com/vtA1TJCXUW
