Today marks the 31 year anniversary of 4-year-old Michael Dunahee’s disappearance on Vancouver Island.
The investigation into Michael’s disappearance remains one of the most notable missing person investigations in Canada.
On March 24, 1991, at about 12:30 pm, Michael went missing from the area of the Blanshard School playground, just a short distance away from his family.
According to the Victoria Police, many families and spectators were in the area at the time for a touch football game.
An extensive search was launched for Michael, which involved hundreds of volunteers and police from multiple agencies.
Last year, investigators released an age enhanced sketch of the boy, created by forensic sketch artist Cpl. Virginia Bernier.
The sketch depicts what Michael might look like at a 34-year-old man.
Police also launched a new online tip portal, and have received hundreds of tips.
Michael’s family has turned their tragedy into a grassroots effort to protect other families.
The annual Michael Dunahee ‘Keep The Hope Alive’ Run has been held for 31 years to mark Michael’s disappearance and highlight the ongoing search.
All funds raised by the event go to Child Find BC.
This year, VicPD Chief Manak will join the Dunahee family during their virtual run.
“We remain committed to solving Michael’s disappearance,” VicPD Chief Del Manak said. “Our investigators truly appreciate all of the information and support we are receiving from our community.”
