Students rally to bring awareness to sexual assault and harassment in schools

On Sunday afternoon a group of high schoolers were at the BC Legislature rallying for awareness and education around consent.

Piper Nicholas, a grade 11 student at Oak Bay High, says she started an Instagram account (@vic_against_sexualassault) to bring awareness to the issue of sexual assault and harassment in and around schools.

Participants in the rally held signs reading “Boys will be what they are taught” and “We believe you.”

Other hand drawn signs read “Sexual assault should not be a high school experience.”

Nicholas hopes that the account and their activism will prompt schools to focus on educating young people on consent.

Specifically, she suggests teachers bring in guest speakers who will go beyond sexual health topics —and into areas such as self-defence and signs of a toxic relationship.
