Victoria’s first fast charging EV station opens on Store Street

The city’s first electric vehicle (EV) Direct Current (DC) Fast Charger has officially opened on Store Street.

City of Victoria

The work on Store Street included the addition of a new accessible parking space and repaving of the street in front of Market Square.

The DC Fast Charging station, also called a Level 3 charger, has space to charge two EVs and is located at the south end of Store Street between Johnson Street and Pandora Avenue, near the Johnson Street Bridge.

“We are continuing to build a future-ready city and we know that residents are switching to zero emission vehicles at a rapid rate,” said Mayor Lisa Helps. “Not only are these new fast chargers a great step towards reducing emissions and addressing the climate crisis, but they are also going to be a great incentive for EV drivers to come downtown and support our local businesses.”

The City and BC Hydro worked together on the site selection and design for the charging station. BC Hydro is responsible for the installation and maintenance of the chargers.

BC Hydro’s DC Fast Charger can rapidly charge EVs, giving them about a 100km range in 30 minutes depending on the vehicle model, making charging faster and more convenient.

The Store Street charging station is the latest completed in Phase 4 of BC Hydro’s EV expansion plan which includes twinning or adding 31 new stations across the province throughout 2021.

Since 2013, the City has invested in EV charging infrastructure by installing publicly accessible charging stations. Currently, the City owns and operates 13 Level 2 (240 volt) chargers in groups of two to four in each of the City’s five parkades and recently installed six Level 2 chargers along Broad Street.

The City is planning to invest an additional $175,000 to further expand Victoria’s EV charging network in 2021 and 2022.
