Masami Teramachi is inspiring people to get out and explore their neighbourhood and the small businesses that call them home.
Masami, who is from the small city of Gifu, Japan, has been living in Fernwood for about a year and has been spending her time checking out the vibrant streets. From locally owned stores and restaurants, murals, beautiful architecture and friendly faces, Masami decided to document her walks around Fernwood in the form of a unique hand drawn map.
She began by taking her film camera with her and taking pictures to share with her friends back home. Then, having already made a walking map of her hometown, she was inspired to do one for Fernwood.
The unique project has been a hit with locals and businesses, so Masami printed off copies and left them at several locations. A shop owner also convinced her to make an Instagram account that people can follow called “Walk with Masami.”
Locals are loving the project, and Masami reports that even as a foreigner, she is able to share new places with residents.
Supporting local, especially during the always tough month of January, was the focal point of the map.
She hopes that the map will inspire more people to go check out their neighbourhood, and to “be grateful for what we have right now.”
The copies have been going fast, but if you would like one of your own you can find them at the Oaklands Community Association, the North Park Neighbourhood Association or the Fernwood Community Association.
