VIDEO: Grant Fuhr makes a stop in Kelowna

He's considered one of the best goaltenders to ever play the game of hockey. Grant Fuhr, who backstopped the Edmonton Oilers to five Stanley Cups has some fond memories of those days. He was extremely busy in net, especially in the early years, because the Oilers didn't place a lot of emphasis on defence. "It was never boring," he said during an interview at the Grand 10 Cinemas. "You get lots of work, but you also get to win a lot of hockey games." Fuhr was in Kelowna for a screening of the film 'Making Coco'. It's a documentary put together by Kelowna native son Adam Scorgie.

The easy-going former goalie has been touring with Scorgie as the film is screened in different cities, so he's seen it quite a few times.

"It's interesting," he said about seeing his hockey life played out on the big screen. "I wasn't sure if I'd like or not in the beginning, but it's turned out good. Adam did a fabulous job so that makes it a lot better."

The documentary film features commentary from a host of big names in hockey like Brett Hull, Martin Brodeur, and Wayne Gretzky. But it certainly has a lot of Fuhr in it. He had to get used to having a camera around during the filming process.

"That was probably the hardest part," he recalled, "being chased around with a camera."

Still, Fuhr said he came to enjoy the opportunity to look back at what was an incredibly successful career. "You're re-living parts of your life, so that part of it was a lot of fun."

When asked which of his personal records he's most proud of: most assists by a goalie in a season, most consecutive wins, most games played in a season by a goalie, Fuhr first returned to what he accomplished with his teammates. "The five cups obviously are nice," he said.

As for his personal accomplishments, Fuhr sounded most proud of what he did after many people had written him off. It was late in his career that he set records as an iron-man goaltender in St. Louis, playing 79 and 75 games in consecutive seasons.

"That's mind over matter. I think that was the biggest thing that you have to decide if you want to be committed to it. And pay the price to do it."

The film also delves into the year-long suspension that Fuhr was handed for drug use. Amazingly, he even sees the positives that came from that.

"You know what? It's life's lessons," he said. "It made me a better person."

Making Coco is a film worth seeing, about a sports career worth remembering.
