(UPDATE: July 15 @ 1:30 pm) - The fire that sparked alongside the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) between Hope and Chilliwack this morning is now considered held.
That means it's not expected to spread beyond its current perimeter.
The fire reached one hectare in size and the BC Wildfire Service says it's exhibiting rank one and two behaviour, which is defined as a smouldering ground or low-vigour surface fire.
Crews still have the right eastbound lane of Hwy 1 blocked off to traffic, which is causing some delays in the area.
(Original story: July 15 @ 10:35 am) - BC Wildfire Service crews are responding to a new wildfire between Hope and Chilliwack.
The fire is directly adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) and has resulted in the closure of an eastbound lane.
At this time, the BCWS says the fire is "out of control" at one hectare in size and the cause remains under investigation.
Two initial attack crews are responding to the incident on the ground and they’re receiving aerial assistance from one helicopter.
A photo shared by the BCWS shows the fire burning right below a power line that runs through the area.
