Canada’s run at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup has ended much earlier than anyone expected.
Considered one of the pre-tournament favourites, Canada is heading home after a loss to Sweden in the round of 16.

The two teams were evenly matched, but a defensive breakdown led to a goal from Sweden’s Stina Blackstenius and that proved to be the difference.
There were plenty of chances for Canada to tie the game down the stretch, but the best opportunity came on a penalty kick.
Janine Beckie took the shot from the spot and her admirable effort was met by an even better save from Hedvig Lindahl.

Even with more than eight minutes of injury time, Canada couldn’t find a way to beat Lindahl and extend the game.
Sweden now moves on to face Germany in the quarterfinals, which will be a rematch of the 2016 Olympic finals.
