Seattle moves one step closer to welcoming an NHL franchise

Professional hockey is one step closer to becoming a reality in Seattle.

On Monday, Seattle city council unanimously voted in favour of a $700 million renovation of Key Arena, slated to be the home of a future NHL team.

The NHL Board of Governors are set to vote on Seattle becoming the league’s 32nd team in early December, a vote that many believe will easily pass following today's decision.

There is certainly an appetite in the city for professional hockey, proven by the 25,000 season ticket deposits sold in only an hour back in March.

A similar season ticket drive for the Vegas Knights took the team two days to sell 5,000 deposits and 18 months to get to secure 16,000.

In February, one keen internet sleuth uncovered a list of 38 domain names registered by the Oak View Group ownership team and while nothing is confirmed, the registered names could very likely be used for the future team.

  • Seattle Cougars
  • Seattle Eagles
  • Seattle Emeralds
  • Seattle Evergreens
  • Seattle Firebirds
  • Seattle Kraken
  • Seattle Rainiers
  • Seattle Renegades
  • Seattle Sea Lions
  • Seattle Seals
  • Seattle Sockeyes
  • Seattle Totems
  • Seattle Whales

While the team won't hit the ice until 2020 if approved, it's exciting news for B.C. sports fans as any club that close to Vancouver will become instant rivals for the Canucks.

A future NHL team would also set up an epic fall sports trip where, on the right weekend, a fan could catch a MLB, NFL and NHL game.
