The Prince George Spruce Kings are BCHL champions

The Prince George Spruce Kings have completed one of the most dominant runs in BCHL playoff history.

The team lost just once throughout the playoffs, posting a record of 16-1 on their way to winning the first Fred Page Cup in franchise history.

Prince George’s only blemish in this year’s post-season was a 3-0 loss to the Coquitlam Express in the first round, all the way back on March 5.

Wednesday’s championship-sealing victory was the team’s 13th straight victory.

On Wednesday, Nolan Welsh and Ben Poisson scored in the first 40 minutes to give the Spruce Kings a 2-0 lead through two periods.

Teddy Wooding scored for the Vernon Vipers in the third to cut the lead in half, but a Patrick Cozzi empty netter in the final minute of play sealed the deal.

Once the buzzer sounded at Kal-Tire Place in Vernon, the Spruce Kings poured off the bench and mobbed goaltender Logan Neaton.

Prince George will now face the Brooks Bandits in the Doyle Cup, which usually determines who will represent the west in the RBC Cup, the National Junior A Championship.

However, Brooks is hosting the tournament this year, which means the Spruce Kings have already earned a berth in the national tournament.
