Sobeys is testing a ‘smart cart’ that would revolutionize the grocery shopping experience

Grocery shopping could soon be a lot easier thanks to a new technologically-advanced grocery cart.

The Sobeys Smart Cart is being tested for the first time at the grocer’s Glen Abbey Sobeys in Oakville, Ont. today and it’s an exciting first step in the grocery carts becoming a commonly seen item.

It has groundbreaking technology that scans and weighs products as customers place them in the cart.

That means the customer will be able to see a running tally of their purchases while shopping and they’ll be able to pay on the spot through the cart.

“While products and customer eating habits have evolved, the in-store grocery shopping experience has remained relatively static for the last 100 years," said Mathieu Lacoursiere, VP of retail support at Sobeys.

"This is a unique way for us to test innovative new technologies aimed at enhancing the customer shopping experience and learn how best to make it faster and easier.”

Lacoursiere adds that the new technology will free up employees to spend more time interacting and assisting customers around the store.

The cart will eventually be used to help customers navigate the store, highlight promotions and make product suggestions based on certain recipes.

There’s plenty of technology that helps these carts work, including multiple high-resolution cameras capturing 120 images per second as products are placed in the cart.

Thanks to those cameras and sensitive weight measures, customers won’t have to scan a thing and can simply toss their products into the cart as they’re counted.

Sobeys has not revealed any kind of timeline on when these carts might slowly roll out across Canada, but one would have to imagine it's still a little ways away.
